Bullying Prevention and Belonging
The National Week of Action against Bullying and Violence theme for this year is Everyone Belongs. This theme captures our commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued and safe. At Waverley, we believe that a strong sense of belonging acts as a powerful deterrent to bullying. When students feel connected and respected, bullying struggles to find a place in our community.
Understanding Bullying
Bullying is a repeated and deliberate misuse of power in relationships, it can be verbal, physical, or social behaviour intended to cause harm. It can happen in person or online and can involve individuals or groups targeting someone who feels unable to stop it. It's crucial to recognise that bullying is not just an isolated incident of conflict or disagreement—it is a pattern of behaviour that can have significant impacts on a student's wellbeing.
Creating a Safe and Inclusive School Environment
At Waverley, we actively work to create a positive sense of belonging by:
- Challenging stereotypes: Encouraging students to look beyond first impressions and get to know each other.
- Promoting empathy: Teaching students to treat others as they would like to be treated.
- Embracing diversity: Celebrating the unique backgrounds, interests, and identities of all our students.
- Fostering positive relationships: Supporting connections that make everyone feel accepted and valued.
- Providing support: Ensuring that every student knows where to turn for help and that their concerns will be addressed promptly.
Taking Action Against Bullying
Our school promotes courage and integrity through the "three part 'I' message," which empowers students to:
- Say "I don't like it" when they experience or witness bullying.
- Request that it stops: "I want it to stop."
- Report it if it continues: "I will report it."
We are committed to ensuring that every report of bullying is taken seriously and managed according to our Department’s values and behaviour expectations.
Support is Always Available
If a student feels unsafe or is experiencing bullying, it is important they reach out for help. Trusted individuals, such as family members, teachers, or school counsellors, are here to listen and provide support. Additionally, external services like Kids Helpline are available for confidential support.
Remember, bullying is never okay, and being bullied is never your fault. At Waverley, we stand together to create a school where everyone belongs and every student can thrive.
Thank you for your ongoing support in making Waverley a place where kindness and respect flourish.
Kind regards,
Mrs Katie Wightman

Book Week
It has been a magic start to Book Week 2024 at Waverley Primary School. We have events planned every day this week. Our focus during the week is sharing the joy of reading by coming together as a school daily to read. We have been lucky to welcome some specials guests to our school to share their love of reading.
On Tuesday we were joined by Newstead College students Brayden Cox-Pregnall and Ella Williams who shared a story book about the importance of being yourself. Later in the week we will welcome guest readers to share more story-telling magic with our students. We look forward to welcoming The Minister for Education, The Hon Joanne Palmer and Rachel Williams, editor of the North-Eastern Advertiser.
Students arrived on Wednesday for the Book Week parade dressed in colourful and creative costumes. The day was a success with students spending time in their classrooms with their teachers and families experiencing the joy of reading together before parading their costumes on stage with their classmates.
It was great to see so many of our students involved in the parade. Thank you to you all for supporting our event by coming along or supporting your child with their amazing costume.

Kindergarten News
Recently, our Kindergarten students explored the excitement of the Summer Olympics in Paris. They learned about the vibrant opening and closing ceremonies, which mark the beginning and end of the Games.
The children were fascinated by the symbolism of the Olympic rings, representing the unity of the five continents, and enjoyed painting their own set of rings.
They also made their own gold medals, which they proudly wore after learning about the wide range of events where athletes compete for medals. We discussed how these athletes train for years to reach such a high level of skill, inspiring the children to understand the value of perseverance and hard work.

LiFT Reading Afternoons
Our recent LiFT reading afternoons have been a wonderful success, inviting families into their child’s classroom to share the joy of reading together. These special afternoons have created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with fresh fruit platters provided for everyone to enjoy while they read.
We are incredibly grateful for the amazing turnout from families, which has been the best in years. Your participation has made these events truly memorable, strengthening the connection between home and school while fostering a love of reading in our children. Thank you for your continued support!

Science Week Excursion
On Tuesday 13th August, our Year 1’s and 2’s travelled by bus to the Queen Victoria Museum Art Gallery (QVMAG) at Inveresk for Science Week.
Together, we engaged in many hands-on and interactive STEAM based learning activities focusing on species survival, solar systems, plants in space, sustainable waste management and recycling. We were fascinated by the many species we investigated under a telescope and the creatures we spotted throughout the day. We were even lucky enough to feel some dinosaur bones!
We all had an incredible time, and we thank our wonderful TA, Mrs Colgrave and parent helpers, Sammie and Jacinta, for making the day so special.

Jump Rope for Heart
Jump Rope for Heart kicks off this term at Waverley Primary School!
Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation’s primary school skipping challenge that helps kids move more, have fun, and raise funds for lifesaving research and programs.
Students will be skipping throughout the term during HPE lessons and student leaders will run skipping lessons and challenges during recess each day.
We will hold our school Jump Off Day on the last day of term 3. This will mark the end of the program and is a chance for everyone to come together to skip and show off their newly learned skills. Students will be encouraged to wear red and donate a gold coin. All money raised will go straight to the Heart Foundation.
Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program. More information will be sent home soon so stay tuned!
